For those history lovers out there, the story of how thieves oil came to be is absolutely fascinating!
According to the historic tale dating back to 1413 in France during the Bubonic Plague (aka The Black Death), the illness was spreading like wild-fire among the entire population, both citizens and doctors alike. At the time, coming in contact with someone with the illness was basically a prescription for a death sentence.
During this difficult time, four thieves were caught stealing from the sick and dying. The thieves were captured and charged for their crime, but none of them ever contracted the plague, even though they had been in very close contact with the Black Death stricken victims.
At this time in history, the crime these 4 men committed carried a punishment of being burning alive. However, the judge was so curious as to how every one of the thieves had been immune to this terrible disease. So he told them he would forego the punishment of being burned alive if they shared their secret to staying healthy.
So the thieves told the judge that they had been perfume and spice merchants, but were currently unemployed due to the devastation the plague had caused to their trade. In their desperation to survive, they prepared a special blend of essential oils and applied it to their hands, feet ears, and temples, along with a mask that they wore over their mouths, in the hope that it would keep them from getting sick as they ransacked the possessions of the dead and dying victims.
After learning about their secret, the judge did indeed stay true to his word. He did not burn the 4 thieves alive; instead, the men were hanged for their crimes.
From that point forward, doctors' treatment for victims of the Bubonic Plague consisted of the same essential oil blend used by the thieves, rubbed on the patients' hands, feet, ears, and temples. In addition, doctors also wore beak-like masks stuffed with cloths that had been treated with the special essential oil blend to keep them from getting ill.
Now you know why doctors are sometimes referred to as “quacks!”
